A SUPERB and EXTREMELY RARE Meissen porcelain figure group, C. From The Commedia D'Elle Arte, or also known as the Italian Comedy.

Originally, it came from another big experienced auctioneers who sells Meissen before 1760 regularly, and said, "Harlequin is conducting the lovers", and "that the cupid was mocking the lover". A really amusing funny group, typical of the Commedia D'Elle Arte, and really FULL OF MOVEMENT. Also, note THE REALLY STRONG EARLY COLOURS, PARTICULARLY ON HARLEQUIN His colours are SUPERB, and his face has wonderful character. Just like the Christies one below. SEE ALL THE INFORMATION BELOW.

Including being in Kandler's taxa, and an example in the Gardiner Museum Toronto. SIZE:- 7 ins / 17.5 cms high by 6 1/2 ins / 16.5 cms across. CONDITION:- ABSOLUTELY SUPERB, AND I MUST ASSUME SIMILAR TO CHRISTIES FIGURE(I CAN'T GET THIS REPORT). MINE HAS MINOR RESTORATION AND VERY SMALL DAMAGE. HER FINGERS ON HER RAISED HAND RESTORED, END OF HER ONE FOOT TOES MISSING.

HARLEQUIN'S EDGE OF HAT RESTORED. THESE TWO MINOR RESTORATIONS ARE PROFESSIONAL AND INVISIBLE. THE EXTREMELY VULNERABLE CUPID HAS HAD HIS WINGS RESTUCK CLEVERLY. I would be amazed if Christies figure was any better condition, and could have been worse. However, the buyers clearly accepted it. Also, I consider mine better painted, as my lady has typical Meissen pre 1760 colours, and the man stronger colours.

OTHERWISE, IT WILL RETURN TO MY COLLECTION. PLEASE ASK AFTER IF YOU MISS IT. I COULD EVEN BE PERSUADED TO MEET IN PERSON TO COMPLETE. It is CHRISTIES- LONDON sale 13th November 2019, lot number 68, with full photos.

A MEISSEN PORCELAIN GROUP OF THE IMPETUOUS LOVER. CIRCA 1740-45, BLUE CROSSED SWORDS MARK AND PRESSNUMMER 45 TWICE. With a shepherdess turning away from her kneeling lover, with Cupid pulling his hair and with Harlequin behind them, on a shaped mound base applied with flowers and foliage.

This group is mentioned in Kändler's Taxa. Where he describes the scene in detail. The group portrays a high ranking lady, dressed as a shepherdess, courted by a youth who is below her in rank and wealth (indicated by his out-turned empty pocket). Cupid restrains and beats the youth as unworthy of the match and Harlequin stands behind them all, mocking the suitor and gesticulating with his ffingers.

An example of this model is in The Gardiner Museum, Toronto (museum number G83.1.911). See also Ulrich Pietsch et al.
