Antique Meissen Cupid Cherub Arrow Heart L Series 109. Meissen Porcelain Cupid with an Arrow and Heart porcelain figure, model # L109, with blue crossed swords mark. Circa - Late 19th C. The myths surrounding winged young cherubs have subsisted throughout the centuries. From Renaissance paintings to Shakespeares sonnets, the youthful god has inspired artists as a symbol of the invincibility (and sometimes irrationality) of love.

This finely hand-painted winged child, raised on a gilt circular stepped pedestal, is portrayed as puncturing a heart , modeled by Heinrich Schwabe circa 1878, interior impressed painter number and bottom mark with underglaze blue pommel crossed swords. Until 1899 the Porcelain Manufactory Meissen acquired altogether 48 models of him, among busts, cupids, children and genre figures. CONDITION: In good condition for its age.

There is some damage to the end of arrow, but it does not distract from the beauty of this figurine. Provenance : This Antique item was part of my family's collection and sat for over 50 years on a shelf next to the finest of Antique Cupids, some of which were dated in the 18th Century.

Cupid has always played a role in the celebration of love and lovers. He is known as a mischievous, winged child, whose arrows would pierce the hearts of his victims causing them to fall deeply in love. Famous European porcelain designers loved creating Cupids in different poses, often humorously conceived in some of the finest porcelain painting studios from 1887 to 1949.
